Fred and Anne Hails emigrated from England in 1940 and 1980 respectively and whilst Canada is now there true home, they both retain fond memories of what have become the golden years of our Mother Country. Having married in 1987 they decided to "retire" and as most who have done so can testify, have become busier today than ever before!

Dickens Sweets began as a hobby in September 2000 in 300sq ft of what was once office space originally opened by Fred himself as Coast Office Equipment in 1971. Jars of sweets and chocolate bars were imported directly from England and the original plan was to work only two days per week.

Within one week, 300sq ft became 600 and within one month 600 became 4000sq ft with the addition of imported groceries. By this time the "little shop was open six days a week and had hired it's first staff member!

In 2002 The British Museum opened in an additional 4000 sq ft with the inclusion of Oliver's Tea Room to be followed in 2004 by Pickwick's Pie Shop! The rest as they say is history!! Today they are proud to offer a true destination experience.

Fred and Anne work together with daughter Trudi and son-in-law Rick, grandchildren Emma and Nick and moral support from daughter Juanita. Dickens is proud to offer a compliment of British staff  They are truly a family committed to bringing to you the best that Britain has to offer!
